Mt Gox
Mt. Gox was one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, based in Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 2010 by Jed McCaleb, Mt. Gox quickly became a popular platform for buying and selling Bitcoin and other digital assets. At its peak, the exchange handled over 70% of all Bitcoin transactions.
However, in early 2014, Mt. Gox suffered a major security breach, in which hackers were able to steal approximately 850,000 Bitcoins from the exchange’s hot wallets. The theft was not immediately discovered, and Mt. Gox continued to operate normally for several weeks, during which time the stolen funds were likely laundered through other exchanges.
